本書由香港浸會大學近代史研究中心、人文中國學報編輯委員會與香港中國近代史學會聯合贊助出版。書中所收錄的論文，是以2001年於香港浸會大學召開「辛亥革命、孫中山與廿一世紀中國」國際學術研討會的學者論文為基礎，經過嚴格的學術評審選定合適者，完成必要修訂程序後，才被收入本書之中。由選文評審開始到正式出版，費時四載有餘。本書共選論文46篇，可反映兩岸三地中國學者與包括美國、日本、澳洲及加拿大等地海外學者近年新見的學術研究成果，亦可視為香港地區出版關於辛亥革命與孫中山研究破紀錄第一套的學術論文集，尤其值得學者加倍重視。

This edited volume studies ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong from the 1840s through the 1950s. It aims to portray Hong Kong history through the perspectives of foreign communities—the British, Germans, Europeans, Americans, Indians, and Japanese—and to understand how they perceived the economic situation, political administration, and culture of the colony. In the chapters, Hong Kong history is seen from the viewpoints of foreign adventurers, businessmen, traders, missionaries, teachers, diplomats, servicemen, officials, artists, ramblers, and opportunity-seekers. By assembling the accounts of the foreign communities, the book assesses the changing circumstances of Hong Kong over a period of more than one hundred years, and traces the rise and fall of various groups as well as the continued development of some of them.
