History is a useful subject that enables its readers to understand and capture the salient features of the shared past of mankind. Although sharing an image of looking always backward, students of history are the ones best equipped to face the challenges ahead.

The Department of History aims to consolidate our students' appreciation of history and to sharpen their critical abilities. The Department offers a wide variety of courses, including both general surveys and special topics, which train our students to develop a holistic perspective of history in their studies. Special attention will also be given to major historiographical and methodological issues in the pursuits of scholarly researches.

Prospective applicants please note that a significant portion of the courses delivered by the Department requires basic knowledge and training in the Chinese language.  Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to comprehend textual sources in Chinese.
